Two noteworthy CD players

SA8005In this day and age of computer audio and streaming, CD players seem to have become distinctly unfashionable. This is a shame really, as a quality CD player can still provide legitimate musical enjoyment. The good news is that there are still companies that believe in the format and are willing to manufacture players that sound great and don’t cost a pile. Take Marantz’s SA8005 for instance. This is an inviting sound player; warm, smooth and detailed. Build quality is remarkable for $1399.00.

Unico CD Here’s a great one from Unison Research (the Unico range). You know it’s Italian and you know it’s going to have a tube or two. To be exact, one 12AU7 in a single ended output stage. The Primo delivers the best of both worlds; the lush textures of valves melded to the slam and weight of well designed solid state. You’ll need a few more dollars for this one; $2190 in silver or $2300 in black.
